The history of this variety has been somewhat lost - but was well-known in the Rivers of Sawbridgeworth nurseries in the mid 19th C - having been grown there for ‘upwards of a century’ according to Mr Rivers himself. The fruit ripens to a rich dark red to near black if allowed to remain on the tree long enough. The flesh is deep red very tender and juicy, but sweet when fully ripe. This Cherry is believed to have originated from before 1847
