A superb flower from North America. It is one of the last to flower, not coming out until the end of June. Has many shiny green leaves, with the flower stem reaching 20-40cm (8-16"). At the top 4, slightly pendent, dark purple or near black flowers are borne, often with an unpleasant smell. The insides of each flower, which you are able to see clearly, have a shiny, painted appearance and the anthers are a contrasting yellow colour. Will grow outside in light shade in humus rich soil, needs to be kept damp after flowering.
