Sorbus aucuparia

Rowan, or Mountain Ash (Sorbus aucuparia) are a common site across the countryside throughout the UK, and particularly in Scotland as they can tolerate very cold, exposed conditions. Although commonly grown as a single specimen tree, they actually work very well as part of a native hedge mix, especially for damper soils. Left to their own devices they would grow up to 5m tall, but can easily be kept pruned to the desired size,

Rowan has a lot to offer as a hedging plant, both to wildlife and to the gardener. Large flat heads of soft white blossom in spring are a wonderful sight, and the compound flowers are loved by bees, as they can move quickly between many flowers gathering nectar. The bunches of bright orange-red berries in autumn contrast well with the autumn colours of the foliage, and again are a very important food source for birds and small mammals. The berries also make a lovely hedgerow jelly, so pick some for yourself!

Plant in a single row every 30-40cm, or include in a wildlife-friendly mixed hedge. You could also plant at a slightly wider spacing and let the trees grow to a bigger size, to create a very robust and pretty windbreak.

Plant sizes:

We pride ourselves on the quality of our hedging plants. As well as the height of the plants, we also specify the age of the plant - all are generally either two years old (1/1) or even three years old (1/2). This means they have a sturdy, extensive root system and strong stems, ready for the perfect start to your garden hedge. You may be able to buy cheaper, but we don’t think you can buy better.
