This produces one of the best autumn displays you will ever see. Forms a large shrub or small tree, with layered and often tangled branches. With age the branches become grey and fawn and start to peel. The leaves are large and bright green, turning to a wild mixture of yellows, reds, oranges and purples in the autumn. In early spring small red flowers are produced on the bare stems of older specimens. If you have the space this makes a superb back of the border shrub or small specimen tree. Produces its best autumn colour on acid soil but will take lime. Height 8m (25ft), spread 10m (30ft).
