Another unusual species, discovered in China in 1894. Neat upright growth, in spring the deep garnet-coloured stems are topped with primrose-yellow flushed pink flowers held in open clusters. The fragrance is divine – a rich spicy scent unlike any other lilac. Prefers a very lightly shaded position, protected from wind. One of the finest of the lilac species. Height: 2.5m (7ft).
