An unusual multi-purpose pear, that although having tiny fruit is considered suitable for dessert (eaten as soon as ready), was also used dyeing cloth, as well as its wide use for perry-making. Originated from Periton Manor in the West Midlands where it has appeared on the family coat of arms since the 14th century - although there is no proof that it is this same variety - it has been known for centuries.
