Description

It is probable that this famous variety was originally found as a seedling in a garden at Alderton, Sussex in the 1830s, but unfortunately its early history has mainly been lost. The trees are fast growing, making a medium-sized and spreading shape, and the fruit are a deep carmine rose, with a wonderful flavour. As well as its use as a dessert variety, it also makes the very best jam. One of the best loved of all fruit trees, and no orchard or fruit garden is complete without one. A heavy and regular cropper it does have its vices - amongst which, it is susceptible to Silver Leaf disease, and the wood is brittle which can lead to breakages in heavy crop years.
