Considered by many to be the most attractive of the Snake-bark maples - the grey-green bark is very clearly striped with bright white, whilst the new shoots are a lovely dark red. Autumn colour is spectacular - the tree is ablaze with shades of yellow, orange and crimson. Relatively fast-growing, but never getting huge, this is a superb choice for a small garden specimen tree. A native of Japan, and introduced into cultivation by Prof. Sargent who found fruiting trees in Japan in October 1892, and sent young trees to Kew a few years later.
