Field and Country hedging plants
A wonderful selection of varieties for farm edges, country gardens - indeed anywhere a more informal, rural style of hedge is required.
Generally tough and easy to grow, they can either be planted as a single species hedge - which can bridge the gap between town and country by providing a little formal structure without looking out too place - or as a classic mixed hedge.
Crataegus mongyna (Quickthorn) is by far the most widely planted and for good reason - it makes a tough, thorny barrier but the blossom and berries provide interest for the garden (and for wildlife). Prunus spinosa (Blackthorn or Sloe) is another excellent option, especially for a stock-proof hedge, although best kept away from horses as the long thorns can cause injury. We offer ready-made mixes which are sold by the metre, which include some fantastic species for a conservation hedge, or otherwise order individual species and create your own bespoke hedge.
Once you have selected the plant you are interested in, you will see that we offer several sizes - and give not only the height of the plant but also the age. Those marked "1/1" are two year old plants, and for some varieties we are able to offer older three year old plants -marked "1/2". You may be able to find plants offered for sale online which are the same height, but they can just be 1 year old plants which have been raised from seed. Our plants are grown on to ensure they have an excellent root system, so they establish quickly and give your hedge the best possible start. You may be able to buy cheaper, but we don't think you can buy better!
