Description

Hawthorn, (Crataegus monogyna), also known as quickthorn, is probably the most widely planted hedge species in the UK. It’s fast-growing, unbelievably tough and hardy, grows on just about any site, and is very wildlife friendly. The blossom in May is a valuable source of nectar for bees, the bright red haw fruits provide food for birds in autumn, and the dense growth is perfect for a safe nesting site.  Hawthorn also makes a perfect stock-proof hedge.

As well as looking good planted as a single species, hawthorn also makes a great basis for a mixed hedge, providing a sturdy core while other species such as hazel and dog rose increase the visual interest and the value to wildlife. For ready made hedging mixes, please see our hedging collections which we sell by the metre.

For garden hedges and boundaries, plant in a single row every 30cm. For a stock-proof hedge, plant in a double staggered row at 5 plants per metre.
