Description
At first glance it looks very much like a Beech, but in actual fact is tolerant of a far wider range of soils than Beech. Firstly pyramid shaped, then developing into a much more rounded tree. Has mid-green leaves with highly toothed edges to them. The bark is grey and smooth to the touch. Bears yellow male catkins and greenish-yellow female catkins, up to 12cm (5") long. These are followed by clusters of green, then brown fruits. This is tough tree that tolerates a poor atmosphere so is good for industrial areas.
