The European dewberry, Rubus caesius, is closely related to the blackberry - so grows much like a bramble, producing long canes which arch or trail with deep purple-black fruit. The stems do have some slender spines on them, but are nowhere near as vicious as a traditional bramble. The leaves turn a stunning purple red in autumn, and the plant is very tolerant of dry, sandy soils, so great for a problem area. The fruit have a delicate flavour, and remain a little tart, but such a fantastic plant deserves to be more widely known.
