Description

A classic component of any mixed native hedge, but pretty enough to make a fine hedge on its own - dense growth with rounded, slightly serrated foliage, fluffy yellow catkins in late winter and green hazelnuts in early Autumn. Very shade tolerant, and will grow in just about any soil except water-logged, hazel is very forgiving and undemanding to grow. Prune out any long uprights every couple of years, this both encourage fresh growth and provides pea-sticks and plant supports for the garden. Very wildlife-friendly - the catkins are a superb early source of pollen, and you will have to compete with many small mammals for the nuts.
