The common or wild pear. Originally from central and eastern Europe and western Asia, this is the pear euqivalent of the crab apple. A tough tree, able to withstand less than ideal conditions, its is a superb tree for wildlife - the early blossom is an important source of nectar for pollinating insects, the leave are a food source for several species of caterpillar, and birds and small mammals will love the fruit in autumn.
