Raised by Mr Robert Whinham of Morpeth, the heavy crops of fruit are dark red, hairy, and the flavour is superb, very sweet. It is perhaps the best red variety, and makes a wonderful gooseberry jam. Although susceptible to mildew, it can cope with heavy soils, and Bunyard reports also, that it ‘does well under trees’.
