Hyacinthus
Hyacinths are possibly the best way to introduce fragrance into the spring garden - the scent of all the varieties we offer is absolutely divine, and will fill the air once the flowers open and are warmed by the April sun. Easy to grow, both outside and in the house, they are becoming increasingly popular again after a few years of being considered slightly 'old-fashioned'.
The name comes from the Greek hero Hyacinthus, a Spartan prince of such remarkable beauty that the god Apollo became intoxicated with love for him. Unfortunately Apollo accidentally killed Hyacinthus whilst teaching him to throw the discus, but the flower is said to have sprung from the soil soaked in his blood. (It's a touching, if slightly gory tale, but actually the flower referred to was probably a delphinium rather than the hyacinths we have today).
We offer two types of hyacinth bulb:
Garden Varieties - bulbs which are ready to plant out in the garden, which will flower in April.
Prepared for Forcing - specially treated bulbs for growing indoors, which will flower earlier if 'forced'. Depending on planting time and growing conditions, they can be made to flower as early as Christmas.
