'Umbrose' may refer to 'shady' (not in the 'dodgy' sense), but because this grass is very tolerant of shade, and makes an ideal addition to woodland areas. The mid-green linear leaves are smooth and quite glossy, with thye addition of spikes of moderate red flowers appearing from May onwards.
