This cultivated variety of the 'Midland hawthorn' grows into a dense spreading tree with dark glossy leaves, and bears a profusion of strongly coloured lightly scented single crimson flowers with creamy centres in May. (Hence the name 'Mayblossom' - and also perhaps the source of the expression "Ne'er cast a clout till (the) May be out"). Height and spread up to 5m in 20 years of growing.
