Description
A wonderful medium sized tree, originally from southern China. Eventually reaching around 15m, with large lime-shaped leaves, its main attraction are the flowers - the true flowers at the centre are purple-red and only 1cm or so wide, but they are surrounded by a pair of pure white bracts which can be 20cm or so wide, which act like petals to attract pollinating insects. They hang in rows on the undersides or the branches and flutter in teh breeze like handkerchiefs, hence the common name. You do need to be patient though, it will take 7 years or so before they begin to flower - good things come to those that wait!
