This variety was listed in an English nursery catalogue of 1783 so obviously around at least that long. Probably the largest fruiting variety, they ripen in October, and the flattened-shaped fruit - which can be as much as 7cm in diameter - is greyish green until ripe when they change brown. The flesh is brown with a pleasant taste, and is excellent for jams. The tree is vigorous and productive, and a heavy bearer and can start to produce as a young plant. This self-fertile dual-purpose Medlar is believed to have originated from before 1783
