Description
A species of Southern Beech (as opposed to the Northern Beeches, of which Fagus sylvatica is the most widely known), from South America, Australia and New Zealand. N antartica is a deciduous tree from the Andes, very hardy and deserves to be more widely planted - the foliage resembles miniature beech leaves, closely set along elegant long branches. The habit is thin and open, and the trunk often kinks and bends as it reaches upwards, so it quickly forms a 'tree of character'.
