This is the common reed, so well-known from pictures of thatched rooves and harvesting in the Norfolk broads. It is a vigorous grower with long flat pointed grey-green leaves that turn golden in autumn. The flower stems that appear from late summer onwards can be up to 3m in height with plumes of purplish-brown shiny flowers. Can be invasive!
