Best known as waterside plants, the willows are a very attractive family with conspicuous catkins and brightly coloured bark on some species. Although they do prefer a damp soil, some such as S. caprea will grow on any reasonable soil. The varieties offered here are either dwarf, or else can be grown as coppice shrubs for their brightly coloured bark - cut the branches back hard every couple of years. For single stem trees, look under Ornamental Trees.
