Description

This reliable early cooker and eater has a light delicate flavour with fluffy flesh. The fruit holds its shape well when cooked, makes a good puree. The tree is vigorous, and is tried and tested for growing on the high fells in Cumbrian conditions (H Wilson). With some similarities to Revd. W Wilks, this variety was first recorded in 1934, but presumed to be rather older.

"This Cumbrian apple was recorded in 1934, but may be Older, and was brought into the National Fruit Collection at Brogdale in 1950. Regarded locally as a reliable early cooker and eater, since.it is ready to pick in August and eat in September, though not in the first rank of delicious apples, it nevertheless helped to meet the need for self-sufficiency of farmers and growers in the Cumbrian Dales and Fells. It is held in several apple collections in the region.

Hilary Wilson keeps it on her list of apples known to do well in adverse conditions, and in this case, is known to produce early, in a cool wet climate, at or above 900ft above sea-level. The fruit has a good plain fruit taste and a low dry weight, so keeps its shape on cooking; it browns quickly when cut." © Lin Hawthorne - 'The Northern Pomona'.
