The ‘Black’ or ‘River’ birch is a bushy deciduous tree capable of reaching 15-20metres in height, with peeling bark, which is at first reddish-brown, later becoming almost black. Originating from Central and Eastern America this tree prospers in wet ground near rivers. The leaves are attractively doubly toothed and glossy dark green, turning to yellow in autumn.
