Florists or Dutch Varieties
Dutch Iris are a group of vareities of Iris x hollandica, a hybrid species created by a Dutch nursery in the 19th century. They produce classic iris-shaped flowers, with larger central petals (standards) over a smaller lower petal (called the fall). Available in a wide range of colours, the silky petals have a wonderful luminesence, and the cut-flowers last very well in vases.
How to plant Dutch Iris bulbs:
Full sun, in a well-drained soil is best, although they will tolerate a little shade. Iris bulbs love a summer baking, so a location where the soil will be hot and dry suring the summer months is ideal. Plant the bulbs as soon after arrival as possible, as they can quickly dry and shrivel in storage.
Plant 12-15cm deep, and add a little horticultural grit at the bottom of the planting hole to ensure good drainage. Dutch Iris look best when planted in clumps - around 9-12 bulbs planted in a group, each bulb 8cm from its neighbour is perfect.
