Description

One of the best pears raised by the Rivers nursery of Sawbridgeworth, and first exhibited at the National British Pear Conference of 1885, hence its name. Probably the best all round pear for cultivation in the UK, and regarded as the essential English Pear. It is reliable, and bears heavy crops of well-flavoured juicy pears even in unfavourable seasons. The fruits are long and narrow, yellowish-green with plenty of russeting, and pale yellow flesh, with a melting juicy and sweet flavour. Often regarded as the ‘safe’ option for self-fruitfulness - Brooke says that Conference is partially self-fertile but also parthenocarpic (i.e. produces sterile fruit without a pollinator) - hence the high level of crops.
