A compact, clump-forming, deciduous grass, growing to about 1m in height and spread, 'Red Chief' has narrow, arching bright green leaves that have a white midrib, and which turn golden-yellow in autumn, fading to pale brown in winter. Feathery flower panicles open rich red in late summer and early autumn, fading to silver and remaining on the plant over wintertime.
