Description

A small round conical fruit with pale yellow flesh that is juicy and sweet. This is an old variety seldom seen south of the Tweed, but valued in its own country.

"Auchans: the renowned Ayrshire Pear originated from a single tree, brought to Scotland from France or Norway in the 16th century, probably during the reign of Mary, Queen of Scots. It was planted in the orchard of Auchens Castle, a baronial manor in Dundonald, Ayrshire, giving the pear its name. Its sweet dessert pears were much sought after, far and wide. Sadly, having stood for centuries, the tree blew down in a storm in 1793. By the early 19th century, the castle itself had fallen into disrepair, the roof finally collapsing in 1925. The ruins still stand, but all traces of the orchard where the Auchans pear tree had proudly stood, have vanished. Plans are afoot to return the Auchans Pear to Ayrshire" © Heather Upfield, June 2025
