Description

We are delighted to be able to offer this very old culinary variety from the 1700s - the huge bright red angular fruit are a spectacular sight in late September. Early season variety which cooks to a sweet puree and makes a fine Apple Charlotte. Very hardy, crops well even in exposed positions. Exact origin unknown, but thought to be from Denmark.

"A femme fatale among apples, buxom and curvaceous, with smooth, bloomed, carmined cheeks, an exhibitionist, known since the 1700s and with a mysterious past, it is one of Bridget Gillespie's favourite subjects for portraiture. It drops to a dense purée, and is recommended for Apple Charlotte, since it is not so juicy as to spoil the dish. It looks stunning on the table; if only the flavour matched the packaging." © Lin Hawthorne - 'The Northern Pomona'.
