Description

An extremely old and unusual variety for the pomological connoisseur! Raised in 1785 by Mr White of Withy Court in Worcestershire, this produces small golden yellow fruit with an intense flavour, sweet yet sharp, rich, nutty and with hints of honey and pineapple. Upright growth which isn't too vigorous, so suitable for a smaller garden - albeit one where sufficient warmth can be provided for the fruit to develop their full flavour. Cropping can be irregular, but it is most definitely worth the wait.

"The stamp of J. Williams of Pitmaston, Worcester, is a mark of special quality, as true of this tiny honeyed apple as of that most enormous pear, Pitmaston Duchess. It was raised at Stoke Edith c.1785, by Mr White, Steward to Lord Foley. Potent with beneficial esters, in a vintage year its crisp golden flash has a richness of intense sweet-sharp juice with nutty notes of pineapple and muscat grape — to live for! Occasionally found in old Scottish orchards, this most choice of dainties was more often grown in warm corners of the epicure's walled garden, and should be still. A golden, oblong-conical apple clothed in a delicate net of pale golden-brown russet, which is more pronounced in mature trees and in cold springs, it is a small, rather slender tree of moderate vigour, well-suited to the smaller garden.
Other notes: resistant to scab, does well in northern Britain. Very attractive blossom." © Lin Hawthorne - 'The Northern Pomona'.
