Raised about 1820 in Boulogne, France, and named after M. Hardy, Director of Arboriculture at the Luxembourg Gardens. A very tasty pear with juicy flesh and a slight rose water flavour - reliable and hardy, one of the best garden varieties, and well suited to northern climates. Pick when still hard and store until ripe. Upright habit and good autumn colour. Doesnt travel very well - so is becoming less commonly seen in supermarkets. This self-sterile dessert Pear is believed to have originated from Boulogne, France in about 1820
