Description

Gourdie is an orchard area between Perth and Dundee, and was the home of Patrick Matthew who was a keen horticulturist and orchardist in the 1800's. In 1831 he published a book on forestry that included several concepts on the thoery of evolution by natural selection similar to those published 30 years later by Charles Darwin - indeed Darwin admitted Matthew's had 'anticipated' his explanation. Matthew created huge orchards in the area around the Gourdiehill estate, and this pear is thought to have originated there. A lovely eating pear, suited to less than ideal growing conditions.
