Modern Shrub

The Modern Shrub type of roses form a very wide-ranging group with little in common except for their origins in the early 20th century, when they were bred for a greater range of colour and disease resistance not always found in the old-fashioned types of roses. Some, but not all are repeat flowering and the shape of the flowers is usually modern rather than old-fashioned. Height is according to variety and in the range of 60cms to 2m. Roses classed as shrubs tend to be robust and of informal habit, making them ideal for use in a mixed shrub border or as hedging, and although not the most commonly sought out types of roses, are growing in popularity with many varieties having huge flowerings of simple single blooms that are highly attractive to pollinating insects. (Varieties include: 'Bonica', 'Marguerite Hilling', and 'Starry-Eyed').
