Sinocalycanthus sinensis

Description

Introduced to this country in the 1980s from China, this is proving to be one of the very best deciduous flowering shrubs. Produces large bright green glossy leaves, topped by large saucer-shaped white flowers with a delightful yellow centres from May to July. Absolutely stunning when in full flower. Fully hardy, but prefers a warm sunny site in soil that does not dry out. Eventual height: 2.5m (8ft).
